President’s Letter

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am very excited and honored to be leading our chapter into a new year. The Board has been very busy this summer planning for the upcoming year and are pleased to inform you about many of the new changes taking place this year.

One of our first new items is our new web site. We have worked diligently over the past few months to bring an entirely new web site to you, full of information, including educational and community events, hot links to web sites, lots of resources and more. Although still in the final preparation stages, the “go live” date is tentatively scheduled for early September. Please check it out at www.armanyc.org.

The next new item you will notice is that we have changed our meeting venue. Our regular monthly meetings will be held at the Midtown Executive Club, 40 West 45th Street. By securing a new venue, we are proud to announce that we have been able to lower our costs and have passed the savings on to you!

Registration for members is now $52 and for non-members, $65. Registration, networking and a cash bar all open at 5:30, followed by a buffet dinner and our featured presentation. The MEC is one of the best kept secrets in Manhattan.

Our first meeting is scheduled for September 11th and the topic is “Ramp Up Your Records Program with Enterprise 2.0″ with speaker Paul Lippe, a former General Counsel and Founder of Legal OnRamp. This meeting is being sponsored by IFC Redweld.

In addition to our educational session in September, we will be announcing some very special honors.

Since the Northeast Region Conference was held in June, we did not have our usual awards banquet. Instead, it was decided that we would honor our vendors and some very distinguished members at our first meeting of the year. The distinguished members will include our Chapter Member of the Year and Honored Member of the Year. And something new - we will be honoring those members who have been ARMA members for 30 or more years. Please join us at the meeting to find out who these special members are as we recognize these outstanding accomplishments!

I hope you have had a wonderful, relaxing summer and I look forward to seeing you all in September.

Melissa G. Dederer, CRM
President, ARMA Metro New York City Chapter

ARMA INTERNATIONAL NEWS
By: Frank LaSorsa, CRM

ARMA International is ready to roll the dice in Vegas from October 19 through the 23. There is a column in this newsletter and another in the March newsletter covering some practical information that will help you plan your trip. Specific information about the course offerings can be found on the web site at http://www.arma.org/.

A new committee has been tasked with developing on-line education courses which will be competency based within the various domains that make up the profession. The committee is chaired by Galina Datskovsky, Ph.D., CRM. The mission of the group is to develop an outline for a series of courses for each of the competency levels. These are also aimed to help those preparing to take the CRM certification test. The course content will be developed by experts in the particular area, and then will be made available as on-line learning. There will be a certificate of completion issued upon the finishing of each series. Look for these courses to be available sometime in 2009. In the meantime, ARMA has a set of ala carte courses (w/o certificates of completion) available at:

Did you know that according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Standard Occupational Classification) the only recognition of records management is that of a file clerk ? For the past two years, ARMA International has been trying to change that by convincing the Bureau that the title of “Records Manager” deserves recognition as a “separate and distinct occupational classification.”

ARMA International is seeking volunteers for a task force that will develop a guideline “demonstrating the relationship between IT and RIM”. The purpose of this guideline is to foster cooperation between the two areas. Anyone with experience and interest can go to:

For those of you who would like to get involved with an ARMA International Committee there are several that are looking for qualified people. These include awards, member relations and leadership development. To apply for one of these positions visit:

ICRM NEWS
by Crystal Cutler

Before the Summer 2008 issue of ProfessioNotes is released next week, the Spring 2008 issue beckons all CRMs with a poignant reminder to stay connected. The benefits of Certification come with a set of obligations; the ICRM’s Code of Ethics. Amid the demonstrations of integrity, openness and lending of only factual opinions, Ethic # 6 calls CRMs to continue their own learning, as they support and encourage the learning of those in or interested in entering the profession. Herein lies the responsibility; to stay connected to each other, to grow professionally and to grow new Records Professionals wherever we can.

To this end CRM attendance at Chapter Meetings, to also make themselves available to the Membership, increases in importance. CRMs are asked to bring at least one new candidate into the testing process each year and to mentor that candidate through to a successful completion. Of late, the ICRM has been inundated with requests for Part 6 Mentors already in short supply. So, if you can’t bring a new candidate in, please register to Mentor an existing one asap.

And while you’re at the site, the ICRM asks you to update your personal information. Contribute to both the ICRM Registry and the ICRM Directory. Verify that ICRM messages can be received at your work email addresses. Then connect, with fellow CRMs via LinkedIn and the ICRM-L Yahoo Group.

A Notice was also issued; Membership Rates will increase. Aimed at enabling the ICRM to continue its support to increasing numbers of members via web based tools, this increase will also relieve the increasing clerical efforts of the Regent Volunteers. Beginning January 1, 2009 the new rate will be $200.00/year. Effective January 1, 2010, this will increase to $250.00/year. Also beginning January 1, 2009 the Inactive Status for CRMs will be dropped. Instituted originally to offset the financial hardships CRMs faced when working outside of the profession temporarily, today as few as 7 or 8 CRMs use this designation each year. To spare the clerical effort of sending out invoices, CRMs using this category should contact the ICRM to change their status’ to either Active or Retired.

Lastly, the ICRM Committees need your help. Please consider volunteering. The Marketing Committee will be developing a plan to promote the CRM to the larger community, as THE credential for Records Managers. And, the new Ambassador Program will be serving as liaison between the ICRM and ARMA Chapters and Regions while developing materials to help CRM candidates prepare for the exams.

Once certified, the real journey begins. Stay connected and give. The rewards are great!

CONFERENCE CORNER
By: Frank LaSorsa, CRM

Now that we are all emerging from the “Dark Knight” of summer 2008, we should take a new look at some of the upcoming meetings and events. “Mama Mia” here I go again with some information that hopefully will make your planning easier. We don’t want you arriving in Vegas looking like “Space Chimp”.

To begin, there are several local New York events that are noteworthy:

NYC Sharepoint User Group (SPUG) - Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 “Using Social Sites to Extend MOSS with Social Feedback” - Ashley Roach Microsoft 1290 Sixth Avenue (51st. Street)

ARMA NYC Metro Chapter - Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 “Ramp up Your Records Program with Enterprise 2.0″ - Paul Lippe Midtown Executive Club 40 West 45th. Street

IDC - Kahn Consulting - Wednesday, September 17, 2008 “Best Practices in E-Discovery, IT Management, Data Protection and Archiving” Marriott Financial Center 85 West Street

IDC - Kahn Consulting - Thursday, September 18, 2008 “Mastering Information Protection and PCI” (Free for all ARMA Members who register before Aug. 29) Marriott Financial Center 85 West Street

CRM Review - Tuesday and Wednesday, September 23 and 24, 2008 Kelley, Drye 101 Park Ave.

ILTA - Tuesday and Wednesday, October 21 and 22 “12th 2008 Annual Electronic Discovery and Records Retention Conference” The Essex House 160 Central Park South

Two upcoming vendor conferences are as follows:

CA World Nov. 16 - 20, 2008 The Venetian Congress & Sands Expo Las Vegas, Nevada

Open Text Content World Nov. 18 - 20 2008 J.W. Marriott Orlando, Florida

Of course, the only event that can follow the summer blockbuster season is the ARMA International Conference in Las Vegas on October 20 - October 23, 2008. There are still direct flights available on Jet Blue, Continental or Delta. The prices have risen somewhat, but are still not outrageous. On the last minute hotel front, the conference hotel (Las Vegas Hilton) has risen to $259 a night as of this writing. Two other nearby Hilton properties which were previously unavailable (Hilton Grand Vacation Club on the Strip and Embassy Suites Convention Center) have opened up rooms and are reasonable priced at $107 and $144 per night respectively.

The Marriott properties have also, as of this writing, taken a price drop:

·Residence Inn, 3225 Paradise Rd. (1-702-796-9300) $189 per night
·Las Vegas Marriott Suites, 325 Conv. Ctr. Drive (1-702-650-2000) $229 per night
·Fairfield Inn, 3850 So. Paradise Rd. (1-702-791-0899) $119 per night

While some of you may have been following the plight of “Hancock” and love sick “Wall-E”, I have a sure thing for you. The discount ticket centers located at:

· Fashion Show Mall
· North Strip (near Riviera)
· Downtown (Four Queens Hotel on Fremont Street)
· Hawaiian Market Place (south strip)

As mentioned in my previous conference corner, they have same day show discounts at 30 to 50% off. Dinner discounts are available in advance and are 50% off at select restaurants.

For those of you who know they will be racking in the bucks (like those MIT students in “21″), here are a couple of more up scale restaurant and bars that you might enjoy:
